Blocktober - My Twist on October’s Art Challenge

Blocktober - My Twist on October’s Art Challenge

Every October, artists all over the world dive into creative challenges like Inktober, following daily prompts to spark new ideas. But this year, I felt pulled in a slightly different direction. I wasn’t connecting with the official prompt list — and honestly, I was craving something a bit more Halloweeny. (Yes, I know that's not a real word)

So instead of drawing, I decided to dedicate the month to block printing, and I created my own Halloween-inspired prompt list. I don’t normally get too into spooky season, but something about this year felt different. Maybe it was the excitement of cooler weather after a long, hot summer… or maybe I just wanted to fully embrace the cozy, creative vibes of autumn. Either way, I was ready to carve — literally and figuratively — my own path.

Making the Challenge My Own

Rather than treating Blocktober as a strict daily challenge, I gave myself permission to do it my way. I streamed the process live on Twitch, carving a few blocks per session instead of forcing myself to create every day.

That flexibility made all the difference. It took away the pressure of perfection and turned the project into something sustainable, something I could truly enjoy. By the end of the month, I still reached my goal of 31 total block prints — but I did it at a pace that matched my real life and creative rhythm.

Finding My Creative Flow

One thing I’ve learned through this block printing challenge is that creative flow doesn’t come from rigid schedules or external pressure — it comes from showing up and letting yourself play.

Having a prompt list gave me direction when I wasn’t sure what to carve, but the best part was how the ideas started to expand once I got going. Each print sparked the next, and by the time I finished, I had a whole mini-collection of Halloween-inspired designs that told their own little story.

It reminded me why I love block printing so much — the tactile process, the imperfect lines, and the way a simple idea can evolve into something beautiful through practice and patience.

Looking Ahead

Now that Blocktober is over, I’m planning to turn all 31 prints into one complete sheet — a full block printing collection that captures this entire creative season. It feels like a perfect keepsake for Halloween, and maybe even something others can enjoy too.

Final Thoughts

Blocktober reminded me that challenges don’t have to look the same for everyone. You can adjust the rules, move at your own pace, and still grow as an artist. What matters most is staying connected to your creative flow and making time for what brings you joy.

Have you ever tried a creative challenge or made your own version of one? I’d love to hear your experience — share your thoughts or favorite art prompts in the comments below! 🎨
