A Personal Touch to Your Self-Care Routine - DIY Painted Ceramic Trays

February 19, 2025

Incorporating creativity into self-care is a great way to unwind, express yourself, and create something useful. One fun and budget-friendly project to try is painting your own ceramic tray to hold your relaxation essentials—candles, lotions, face masks, essential oils, or anything that brings you peace. The best part? It’s a simple craft that anyone can do, and it adds a personal touch to your self-care routine.

Why Make a Self-Care Tray?

A self-care tray isn’t just a decorative piece—it’s a functional way to organize your relaxation essentials while giving you a moment to slow down and be creative. Painting your own tray allows you to:

  • Personalize your self-care space.
  • Engage in a mindful, relaxing activity.
  • Express creativity in a simple yet rewarding way.
  • Make something unique that brings you joy every time you see it.

And the best part? You don’t need to spend a fortune to do it!

What You’ll Need

  • Ceramic trays (Doesn't matter the size and I found mine at the dollar store for just $1.25 each—super affordable!)
  • Gesso or primer (to prep the surface for painting)
  • Acrylic paint (any colors you love!)
  • Paintbrushes (a mix of small and medium sizes for details and backgrounds)
  • Paint markers (for adding fine details and highlights)
  • Mod Podge or spray sealant (to protect the final design - Matte or Glossy, whichever suits you!)
  • Optional: Stencils or gold leaf for extra flair

Step-by-Step Guide to Painting Your Self-Care Tray

1. Prep Your Tray

If your ceramic tray has a glossy surface, you may need to apply a coat of gesso before painting to help the acrylic paint stick. I found mine in the art supply section, and it was already primed for painting, so I could start right away! However, I added a coat of gesso anyways! Let the surface dry completely before moving on to the next step.

2. Paint the Background First

Before jumping into details, start with a base layer. I chose calming colors like blues and greens that felt relaxing, but you can pick any shades that match your aesthetic. Paint an even layer over the entire surface and let it dry before adding another coat if needed.

3. Add Your Design

This is where you can let your creativity shine! I painted fun leaves because they bring a peaceful, nature-inspired vibe. But you don’t have to copy my design—go with whatever makes you happy! Some ideas:

  • Abstract patterns
  • Florals
  • Stars and moons
  • Inspiring words or affirmations
  • Simple color-blocking

Let each layer dry before adding more details.

4. Highlight and Detail with Paint Markers

Once the main design is done, grab paint markers to add highlights and fine details. This is great for outlining shapes, adding veins to leaves, or even writing motivational words. It’s a simple way to elevate your design and make it pop.

5. Seal with Mod Podge or Spray Sealant

To protect your artwork and make your tray more durable, apply a coat of matte Mod Podge (or a spray sealant). This keeps the paint from chipping and gives your tray a smooth, finished look. Let it dry completely before using it.

Helpful Tips for a Relaxing and Fun Experience

  • Don’t stress about perfection! The goal is to enjoy the process and make something that feels personal.
  • Choose colors and designs that bring you peace. If bright and bold makes you happy, go for it! If neutrals and pastels are more your vibe, lean into that.
  • Make it a self-care ritual. Light a candle, play relaxing music, and take your time with each step.
  • Try it as a solo or group activity. This project is perfect for a quiet, solo evening or a fun craft session with friends.

Final Thoughts

Painting your own ceramic tray is an easy and creative way to bring self-care into your daily life. Not only does it add a personal touch to your relaxation space, but the process itself is a calming and mindful activity. Whether you use your tray for organizing skincare, holding candles, or simply as a decorative piece, it’s a special reminder that self-care can be both beautiful and fun.

Have you ever painted a ceramic tray? What design would you choose? Share your ideas in the comments—I’d love to see what you create!
