Crafting Positivity: Release Negativity and Embrace the New Year
Are you ready to start the new year with a fresh mindset and a splash of creativity? Let’s turn those pesky negative thoughts into a beautiful, empowering piece of art that reminds you of your best qualities every day. This simple yet therapeutic craft is perfect for both adults and kids, making it a great solo project or family activity.
Grab your supplies, roll up your sleeves, and let’s craft some positivity!
Why This Project?
Did you know that art has been shown to reduce stress, improve mood, and boost mental clarity? By combining self-expression with a tangible reminder of positive affirmations, you’re not just making art—you’re creating a tool to shift your mindset.
Fun Fact: Writing down negative thoughts and then covering them up has been linked to reduced emotional intensity. It’s a creative way to say goodbye to those thoughts and reclaim your mental space!
Supplies You’ll Need:
-
1 piece of mixed media paper
-
1 piece of regular paper (white or colored—your choice!)
-
Black pen
-
Acrylic markers (for vibrant, bold designs)
-
Acrylic paint (at least two colors—pick ones that bring you joy!)
-
Cup of water
-
Paintbrush
-
Glue
-
Scissors (optional—you can rip paper instead!)
Let’s Get Started!
Step 1: Acknowledge and Release the Negativity
Take your mixed media paper and black pen. Write down every negative thought you’ve heard from others or believed about yourself. Don’t hold back—scatter these words and phrases randomly across the page. This step is like clearing out the mental clutter.
Step 2: Paint Over the Negativity
Squeeze random dollops of acrylic paint all over the paper. Now, using your paintbrush, make large X-shaped strokes to cover up every negative thought. Watch as the colors blend together—it’s a visual representation of those thoughts disappearing into your brain’s “trash bin.” Let this step remind you that you’re in control, and those thoughts no longer define you.
Pro Tip: Choose uplifting colors, like yellows, blues, or purples, to make the final piece even more energizing!
Step 3: Add Positivity
While your painted paper dries, grab the regular paper and either rip or cut it into smaller pieces. These will be your “positivity patches.” On each piece, use your acrylic markers to write positive words, affirmations, or compliments about yourself. Think:
-
“I am kind.”
-
“I am creative.”
-
“I bring joy to others.”
Experiment with different marker colors and fun lettering styles!
Step 4: Assemble Your Positivity Collage
Once the painted paper is dry, arrange your positivity patches on top. Play around with placement until it feels just right. When you’re happy with the layout, glue the patches down.
Display and Enjoy
Congratulations—you’ve just crafted a powerful reminder of your worth! Hang your positivity board somewhere you’ll see it often: your workspace, bedroom, or even by your front door.
The more you focus on positive thoughts, the more they’ll become second nature. It’s a simple step toward a happier, healthier you!
